Washing instructions in a nutshell

IMPORTANT- PLEASE READ

Before you wash, make sure all of your Velcro tabs are fastened on the laundry tabs.  For bumgenius! and Bummis it is a square tab located on the back side of the diaper; for Happy Heiny’s you need to fold the tabs over.  If you don’t do this, laundry will be a mess!

Hemp: MUST be washed on HOT 5-8 times with 1-2 TBSP of laundry detergent and dried between washings. IMPORTANT: YOU MUST WASH HEMP SEPARATELY FROM ANY COTTON PRODUCTS UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE HOT WASHES.  Happy Hempy’s are already pre-washed.

Unbleached pre-folds: MUST be washed on HOT 5-8 times with 1-2 TBSP of laundry detergent and dried between washings.

Bleached pre-folds:  MUST be washed on HOT 3-5 times with 1-2 TBSP of laundry detergent and dried between washings.

Hemp and pre-fold quick prep:  Boil 20 minutes.  Add a non-antibacterial dish soap (we recommend Dawn Original) until you see suds form and boil 5 minutes more.  Rinse, rinse, rinse until the suds are gone and then dry- then they can be washed with other diapers. IMPORTANT: You must quick prep your hemp and cotton separately from each other until this step is completed. DO NOT boil anything with elastic in it!

Material such as PUL (used on pocket and covers), microfiber, organic cotton, sherpa, fleece, and suede cloth: wash once on warm or warm/hot and dry in dryer or air dry.  We recommend you air dry all covers and pockets.  Please check manufactures label if you wish to dry them in the dryer.

Once all of your diapers are pre-washed, you may wash everything in the same load.

Questions? Email, call us, or look at the manufacturer’s label for washing instructions.

DIAPER CREAMS:  IF you need to use diaper cream we recommend that you use a liner in your diaper with all of the creams listed.  Some diaper creams will stain your diapers and some will make your diapers repel instead of absorb.  Cream you may use without a liner if you need to are: Angels Baby Bottom Balm, Northern Essence Diaper Salve, Northern Essence, Better Butter Cream, Grandma El's, Claymazing Powder.  All of these are compatible to use with cloth diapers however when in a pinch you may use the following WITH a diaper liner.  IF any of the following creams gets on your diapers it may take some effort to get it out but you can remove it.  Desitin Creamy, Balmex Zinc Oxide, Aveeno (recommended), or A&D Zinc Oxide Cream.

Washing Routine:  Once your diapers need to be washed again we recommend that you set your washer on the highest water setting, then rinse and spin on cold with no detergent a, wash on warm or hot with detergent, Then your diapers should be ready to be dried.  If they smell or the diapers are still dirty you need to wash them again.  If you see suds in the last rinse, you are using too much detergent and you need to rinse them until the suds are gone. Do not wash in temps higher then 120 degrees F or 60 degrees C.

Some of our recommendations detergents are:  Purex Free and Clear, All Small and Mighty Free and Clear, All Free and Clear, Oxy-Prime, Allen’s Naturally, County Save, Eco-Max, Planet (great for hard water), Nellie’s, Seventh Generation Delicate Care. Tide Free and Clear (Tide free is just ok) and Norwex.  When using a detergent you only use about ½ the amount that the manufacturer recommends. Bleach may be used in small amounts (1/4 cup) once a month to help fight odor and to sanitize your diapers. Please remember to rinse.

Do not use vinegar, baking soda or fabric softeners on any of your diapers!
